DRIFTS provides satisfactory discrimination between roasted coffee and roasted adulterants
If you are searching for a fast and accurate method of detecting coffee adulterants, then you should consider using DRIFTS, a new technique that uses normalized spectra to detect adulterants. Unlike ATR-FTIR, which only provides higher intensity absorption, DRIFTS is able to provide a more comprehensive analysis of the adulterants present. The methodology also offers high correlation coefficients, thus confirming DRIFTS as a valuable analytical tool.
In order to evaluate DRIFTS, we used it to distinguish between pure coffee and roasted adulterants. We tested a variety of samples, which included Arabica coffee beans, roasted coffee husks, and roasted corn. Some samples had more than one adulterant, ranging from 1% to 66% w/w. After obtaining the raw spectra and normalized spectra, we used the statistical tools at our disposal to identify which samples exhibited the best discrimination.
While it was not possible to compare the results of the various pretreatments against each other, we were able to identify which sample types performed best. This was done by using partial least squares regression to relate processed spectra to the mass fraction of adulterants in each sample.
Although DRIFTS is a useful and valuable analytical tool, there is still room for improvement. To improve the quality of DRIFTS, we need to better understand how the different components of the system interact with each other. Several other techniques may be required to fully explore this. Until then, we will continue to investigate DRIFTS, especially in the field of coffee.
Although DRIFTS offers a relatively small set of features, there are a number of other sophisticated analytical methods that offer much more information. These include real-time polymerase chain reaction, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and high-performance liquid chromatography. However, they require a lot of money and a highly trained individual to do the job right. That is why we are interested in examining these technologies to see how they can be applied to food and beverage products.
Finally, we compared DRIFTS to another spectroscopic technique called FT-MIR. FT-MIR offers a similar degree of accuracy and accuracy with a much smaller sample size.
